Production : Covering The Song
I had thought about this ever since I started filming the video. I love singing and I had covered some songs in the past too, so what if I covered this one too and used it in my video :)
Being a really expressive song vocally, Nutshell was a tough choice, so I gave it my all. While I was home alone, I took my chance and sang freely over the official instrumentals. I used my phone and earphones to record my vocals and for editing, I used the application called Garageband. Garageband has many features to make full-cover songs. Without the need to use any professional equipment, it allowed me to produce a good-quality cover of "Nutshell", suitable to be used for the music video.
Since the song is quite unconventionally written, without a proper chorus and a bridge, I improvised as I was recording and added a couple of extra lines near the end. When the guitar solo starts, I sang over the lines " Why'd you have to die?" twice, which influences the story a little too. They are quite muffled and reverbed but aren't meant to be clearly understood anyway. Those who will understand will just be lucky I guess :)
Also while I was at it, I even added some adlibs at the start and end of the song, just to give it more atmosphere and make it more of my own. The original song lets the instrumentals shine more, while in my version, I let my voice support the instrumentals more. Plus my voice is lighter and breathier than the original singer, Layne Staley's. It was fun singing this song, and I just hope I did it justice by honouring the late Late Staley.
I have not announced anywhere that the music video will be for my actual cover of Nutshell. At one point I thought about doing it but then wanted to keep it a surprise and reveal it when I release the music video officially.
