INSPIRATION
As an artist, I find inspiration all around me and whenever I get the chance, I capture the moment with any camera I have, usually my phone. Throughout the years I've come to develop a lot of knowledge about filmmaking, and enhanced that further in AS. Although I love the art of photography, I've developed an interest more in videography, as it appears to be far more immersive and impactful than photographs. The power of sounds and visuals is enormous if used wisely and there is magical stuff you can make with them.
Since I have opted for a music video for my A2 advanced portfolio, I'll be listing down some major inspiration that has had an impact on my aesthetic a lot, and will be implementing eventually.
1. Lana Del Rey
Perhaps my favorite artist in the music industry, because in my opinion Lana Del Rey is one of the most talented geniuses when it comes to visual and musical aesthetic. I discovered her from her "Love" music video which was the lead single for her album "Lust For Life" in 2017. This album introduced me to a visual style of storytelling through it's music videos, which became a major influence on my digital and video work.
2. Wong Kar Wai
A Hong Kong film director, screenwriter and producer who has intrigued me with his visual style of cinema, especially his two films, Chungking Express (1994) and Fallen Angels (1995). Through these two movies, we get a look at Honk Kong in its raw and natural atmosphere with the saturated lights at night and raw camera angles that really put the viewer in an immersive world familiar to them. Kar Wai explores cinema through a different lens that gives a different perspective to the stories he writes. I'd love to apply his aesthetic and pay him the homage he deserves.
3. BRTHR
A duo of Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman, from Tokyo and New York respectively. Deemed as one of "the most influential music video directors" of this decade. BRTHR has a distinct style of composing music videos. They mash vibrant pop culture elements with an energetic style of editing, creative transitions, and integrating cinematic shots with visual effects. Their videos end up very immersive and interesting, and visually stunning. BRTHR understand storytelling through imagery, and they are true to their work as majority of it had been shot, edited, colored and animated by their own hands.
Although there are many other inspirations I could list down but these are the ones that have had a major influence on me and I will definitely be using some of their elements into my advance portfolio. I'll keep experimenting different styles of videography and try to improve my skill in visual storytelling. Till then, there's more to see...
